Resume Builder FAQs

Common questions about building an effective resume.

ATS stands for Applicant Tracking System — software used by employers to filter resumes before a human reads them. An ATS-friendly resume uses standard section headings (Work Experience, Education, Skills), avoids tables, columns, text boxes, and images in the main content area, uses common fonts, includes keywords from the job description, and is saved as a clean PDF or Word doc. Fancy designs with multi-column layouts often fail ATS parsing.
One page for 0–5 years of experience. Two pages for 5–15 years. Three pages for very senior roles or academic CVs. Recruiters typically spend 6–10 seconds on an initial resume scan — dense, multi-page resumes for early-career candidates signal poor communication skills. Prioritize your most recent and relevant experience. Remove jobs older than 10–15 years unless critical. In the UK and most of Europe, "CV" is standard (can be longer); in the US, "resume" implies brevity.
In the US: A resume is a brief 1–2 page summary tailored to a specific job. A CV (Curriculum Vitae) is a comprehensive academic document listing all publications, research, teaching, grants, and achievements — used for academic, research, or international positions. In the UK, Australia, and most of Europe: "CV" is used where Americans say "resume" — typically 2 pages for most jobs. The term "resume" is rarely used.
Bullet points for experience descriptions — they're easier to scan in 6 seconds. Each bullet should start with an action verb (Led, Developed, Increased, Managed, Designed) and ideally include a quantifiable result: "Reduced page load time by 40% through lazy loading implementation." Paragraphs work for your professional summary (2–4 sentences max). Aim for 3–5 bullets per role, not more — quality over quantity.
